Seized Crypto Stolen As South Korea’s Tax Authority Leaks Private Key

A piece of paper ruined everything. South Korea’s National Tax Service (NTS) published an official press release last Thursday meant to highlight its crackdown on tax dodgers — and somewhere in the process, a full wallet seed phrase was photographed, printed, and sent out to the public without anyone apparently noticing.

By the time someone did, $4.8 million worth of tokens had already walked out the door.

One Photo, One Mistake, Millions Gone

The press release included an image of a Ledger hardware wallet placed next to a handwritten sheet containing the wallet’s complete mnemonic phrase — the string of words that functions as the master key to any crypto wallet.

No blurring. No masking. Nothing. According to reports from Korean media outlets including Naver and Chosun, the release was part of a broader NTS enforcement campaign targeting people who owed taxes, with seized crypto assets shown as evidence of the agency’s work.

What was meant to showcase government action instead handed anyone with sharp eyes full access to the funds inside.

Blockchain researchers who examined the wallet’s transaction history found three separate incoming transfers totaling 4 million PRTG (Pre-Retogeum) tokens, followed by a single outgoing transfer that swept the entire balance to another address. Clean. Quick. Gone.

Researcher Says Actual Losses May Be Smaller Than They Appear

Associate professor Jaewoo Cho of Hansung University’s Blockchain Research Center confirmed the theft publicly on X, writing that the 4 million tokens — valued at roughly $4.8 million — were taken directly from the mnemonic phrase exposed in the NTS release.

He also examined other wallets whose seed phrases may have been visible in the same image and said those did not appear to carry significant risk.

Cho added that because PRTG tokens are hard to convert into cash, the real financial damage could be far smaller than the headline number suggests. He expressed hope that the incident would push South Korean government agencies to finally build proper systems for holding seized crypto assets.

The NTS has not issued a public response to the incident as of this writing.

A Pattern Of Custody Problems In South Korea

What makes this story harder to ignore is that it did not happen in isolation. Reports say South Korean police separately discovered in February 2026 that 22 Bitcoin seized during a 2021 hacking case had gone missing from a cold wallet kept inside a Gangnam police station vault.

Two suspects were arrested after investigators determined the coins had been moved using a mnemonic phrase that authorities had never held control over.

The coins, worth roughly $1.4 million, are gone.

Bitcoin Recovers Following Plunge as US, Israel Begin Bombing Iran

0

The price of Bitcoin rapidly fell overnight as the United States and Israel began joint “major combat operations” in Iran, bombing numerous military targets in what officials said were attempts to end the country’s nuclear and ballistic missile programs, as well as take out key military leaders.

But while Bitcoin plunged from a price of $65,572 to $63,176 in about an hour overnight following word of the strikes, the leading cryptocurrency has mostly recovered that ground in the hours since.

It’s currently trading for $65,051, according to data from CoinGecko, still showing an approximately 0.8% loss on the day and 5.2% fall over the last seven days.

Major altcoins like Ethereum, XRP, and Solana also fell sharply following the overnight attacks, but have similarly made up most of that ground as of this writing, showing daily losses of less than 2% each.

Crypto liquidations surged overnight amid the rapid market plunge, with CoinGlass showing about $490 million worth of positions liquidated over the past 24 hours, led by Bitcoin and Ethereum longs. Overall, Bitcoin positions make up $196 million worth of the liquidations, with Ethereum following at $132 million.

At its overnight low, Bitcoin was approximately 50% down from its all-time high mark above $126,000 set last October. The leading cryptocurrency has fallen sharply over the last month, about 23% during that span. Bitcoin started the year at a price around $87,000.

Crypto prices have historically been impacted by geopolitical turmoil, and this time around is no different. For example, the price of Bitcoin and other assets fell sharply after Russia invaded Ukraine in 2022.

The overnight strikes led Iran to launch retaliatory attacks against U.S. military assets across the Middle East, while Iran reckons with the fallout from the bombings. News agencies have reported mass civilian casualties in Iran, including a reported 85 deaths after a girls school was struck in the Minah province.

Users on Myriad—a prediction market operated by Decrypt‘s parent company, Dastan—increasingly believe that the Iranian regime will collapse before October, currently penciling in a 51% chance of that happening. Those odds rose 20% over the last day.

Pepe Coin Price Prediction: Why Pepeto Could Claim Top Meme Coin Status as PEPE Crashes 80% From Its Peak

0

Pepe Coin price prediction has again captured attention as the token continues its volatile crash in 2026. PEPE posted a remarkable 1,300% increase in 2024 that reached $0.000028 in December. Prices now sit near $0.0000042, down over 80% from that peak. Whether PEPE’s cycle has peaked permanently or another rally is still possible remains the biggest debate in the meme sector. Meanwhile, Pepeto has entered the arena at $0.000000186 with three real products for the $45 billion meme economy and the Pepe cofounder steering the ship.

Bitcoin bounced to $68,500 on Wednesday then got dumped right back to $65,600 by Thursday. The whales squeezed $400 million in short positions then immediately took profits according to CoinDesk. Classic manipulation. The Fear and Greed Index sits at 5. Bitcoin is down 50% from its $125,000 October 2025 peak.

Is Pepe Coin Price Prediction Still Bullish After the 80% Crash

The outlook for PEPE remains divided. On one hand, PEPE still holds a market cap around $1.7 billion and boasts nearly half a million holders. Trading volume regularly surges above $600 million in 24 hours, showing no shortage of short term interest. But since January, the story has faded. PEPE crashed 80% from its peak because it never built a single product to sustain demand. Whale activity continues to disrupt liquidity with trillions of tokens flowing in and out of exchanges. PEPE behaves more like a trading playground than a long term investment.

Dogecoin sits at $0.10. SHIB holds at $0.0000059. BONK trades at $0.0000107 with a $911 million cap. FLOKI sits at $0.000029 with $276 million. Solana dropped to $86.62. XRP trades at $1.42. Cardano holds at $0.29. Every old meme coin proves the same fundamental problem. Billions in value built on zero infrastructure according to Forbes.

Why Pepeto Could Overtake PEPE by Building What It Never Had

While the Pepe Coin price prediction hangs on uncertain chart patterns, Pepeto makes noise for completely different reasons. The Pepe cofounder already proved what pure culture can create. He built PEPE from nothing to a multi billion dollar market cap with zero products. Pure virality. Pure meme energy. That was the experiment. It worked beyond imagination. But then PEPE crashed 80% because there was nothing underneath.

That lesson created Pepeto. The cofounder took everything he learned and built three real products for the meme economy. PepetoSwap has been announced by the team and is close to being ready, handling cross chain meme trading with zero transaction tax. Pepeto Bridge approaches deployment, routing tokens across Ethereum, Solana, BSC, and every blockchain where billions sit trapped. Pepeto Exchange enters final development as the first curated listing hub for verified meme coins.

Dual audits from SolidProof and Coinsult found zero critical vulnerabilities. Staking at 211% APY rewards holders. The presale at $0.000000186 represents ground floor territory compared to what three real products and a proven founder can deliver.

Whales Bounce Bitcoin Then Dump It While Accumulating Pepeto

The whale playbook is transparent. They pumped Bitcoin to $68,500 by squeezing $400 million in shorts. Then they immediately dumped it back to $65,600. Trump’s 15% tariff shock compounds the damage. US Embassy staff are evacuating Israel and Lebanon amid war concerns. Every macro headline creates more fear.

But Morgan Stanley is building Bitcoin trading infrastructure for $9 trillion in assets. Indiana approved public retirement Bitcoin ETF investments. Solana ETF inflows hit a 2.5 month high. The bullish fundamentals remain intact.

Could Pepeto Deliver 269x While PEPE Struggles to Recover

At $0.000000186, a $1,000 investment becomes $269,000 at $0.00005. A $5,000 position crosses $1,345,000. PEPE gave early buyers 1,300% then crashed 80% because it had zero products. Pepeto has three products approaching launch and the founder who built PEPE steering the ship. The meme coin market thrives on community, innovation, and timing. With PEPE exhibiting cracks following its record crash and Pepeto reinventing the playbook with real infrastructure, 2026 may witness a change of guard. The whales are accumulating at six zeros while retail traders panic sell. $1,000 becomes $269,000. The presale window will not survive the next bull run.

Banking Regulator Floats New Stablecoin Yield Rules—Do They Hurt Coinbase?

0

In brief

  • The OCC proposed rules that would restrict certain stablecoin rewards programs under the GENIUS Act.
  • The language could affect Coinbase’s USDC rewards arrangement with Circle, some industry experts said.
  • But the rules are changeable, and not final, and others believe they won’t outlaw top stablecoin rewards programs.

A key Treasury Department bureau released preliminary rules this week detailing how it will implement the stablecoin-focused GENIUS Act—and industry experts are split about whether the proposal could impact America’s top stablecoin rewards program.

On Thursday, the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency, the nation’s top banking regulator, released a massive, 376-page proposed rulemaking detailing how it intends to implement the GENIUS Act, which was signed into law by President Donald Trump last summer.

Among the proposed rules—which are subject to a 60-day public comment period—are multiple sections prohibiting certain types of stablecoin rewards. The prohibitions appear to outlaw certain arrangements between stablecoin issuers and third parties in which the third parties pass yield onto stablecoin holders in connection with their “holding, use, or retention” of the tokens.

That sounds not so far from the current arrangement between USDC issuer Circle and Coinbase. Both companies share revenue from the yield generated on USDC’s reserves, and Coinbase currently offers users roughly 4% yield, essentially a type of interest payment, on their USDC deposits.

Multiple crypto policy leaders told Decrypt they think the OCC’s proposed language could impact Coinbase’s current USDC rewards program, but emphasized the complexity of the proposed rule and the possibility that it could be worked around.

One of the policy leaders said Coinbase was likely always going to need to adjust its USDC rewards program at least somewhat after the implementation of the GENIUS Act. Coinbase did not immediately respond to Decrypt’s request for comment on this story.

Last year, Coinbase reported $1.3 billion in stablecoin revenue. The company cited its USDC rewards program as its key growth driver in 2025.

Some crypto executives have denounced the OCC’s proposed rulemaking, deeming it regressive.

Scott Johnsson, a finance lawyer and crypto-focused venture capitalist, told Decrypt he thinks the language “most likely does” impact Coinbase’s USDC rewards program. But he also expects the rule will be challenged, and changed.

But others have taken a different tune. Circle’s head of global policy, notably, commended the OCC on its proposed regulations—a sentiment echoed by Circle’s CEO, Jeremy Allaire.

“This is all part of accelerating U.S. leadership in transforming the economic and financial system and rebuilding it natively on the internet,” Allaire said.

Perhaps underscoring the possibility that Coinbase and Circle needn’t worry too much about the proposed rules, a banking industry source told Decrypt that the OCC’s announcement does not give them much comfort. The banking lobby has been pushing for months to restrict stablecoin rewards, which it worries could siphon customers away from traditional, low-yield bank accounts.

“It really doesn’t solve the problem,” the banking industry source said, alluding to potential loopholes in the OCC’s proposed restrictions. The source emphasized that rulemakings “can always be changed.”

The banking industry would rather have restrictions on stablecoin yield permanently enshrined in law, the source said. For over a month, banking and crypto representatives have gone back and forth negotiating the issue of stablecoin yield, as part of negotiations on crypto’s stalled market structure bill. The meetings, led by the White House, were intended to arrive at a deal by this weekend—but a deal is unlikely to materialize so soon, Decrypt reported earlier Friday.

“This doesn’t fix the debate,” Todd Phillips, a law professor at Georgia State focused on bank regulation, said of the OCC’s proposed rules. “This is not going to satisfy the two warring sides.”

Crypto community fears Iran choking oil supply and crashing markets, but that may be overblown

0

As tensions flare once again between Iran, Israel, and the U.S., social media, especially on crypto social media X (or Crypto Twitter), fears that Tehran could shut down the Strait of Hormuz, a vital oil chokepoint. Such a move, many worry, could send oil prices and global inflation soaring and roil financial markets, including bitcoin.

However, those concerns may be exaggerated, according to some observers.

Early Saturday, Israel and the U.S. launched airstrikes on Iran, aiming to dismantle the nation’s nuclear facilities and missile capabilities after failed negotiations. Iran retaliated by firing ballistic missiles at Israel and the U.S. bases in the region, escalating fears of a full-blown military conflict.

This sparked jitters in the crypto market, the only venue open for investors to express fear and risk, while traditional markets stay closed over the weekend.

Bitcoin , the leading cryptocurrency by market value, dropped to $63,000 from around $65,600 before rebounding to $65,000. Oil-linked futures on Hyperliquid surged more than 5%.

Hormuz fears

The Strait of Hormuz is a chokepoint (21 miles wide at its narrowest point) between Iran to the north and Oman to the south, and facilitated about 20 million barrels of oil shipments each day in 2024, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA).

Naturally, amid simmering tensions, crypto accounts on X are worried that Iran may close the Strait of Hormuz, choking off oil supplies.

“If a direct conflict between the United States and Iran has begun, this isn’t just geopolitics. It’s a global economic event. If the Strait of Hormuz is threatened, oil could spike toward $120–$150,” an X handle called @Crypto_Diet said.

This could lead to an inflation shock, market sell-offs, a dollar surge, and depreciation in emerging-market currencies, the post added.

Several more accounts have posted similar views, with some savvy geopolitical experts sharing these concerns.

“Oil prices had already climbed to six-month highs ahead of the strikes. Iran is a founding OPEC member and the Strait of Hormuz, through which roughly 20% of global oil passes, is now directly implicated,” Geopolitical Strategist Velina Tchakarova said.

On top of that, some news outlets are already reporting that several oil majors, including trading houses, have suspended oil and fuel shipments through the strait.

Outright closure unlikely

Some observers, however, argued that an outright closure of the strait is not in Iran’s best interests and may be geographically impossible.

According to Daniel Lacalle, a PhD economist, fund manager, and chief economist at Tressis, Iran currently produces 3.3 million barrels per day of oil, but exports just half of that, which almost entirely goes to its ally China.

“It would shoot itself in the foot,” Lacalle said, downplaying fears of an eventual Iranian shutdown of the strait.

He added that OPEC members could quickly offset any potential disruption to oil supplies from Iran, while stressing that the United States, by itself, is the world’s largest oil producer.

In other words, any spike in oil prices could be measured and temporary.

The other aspect to consider is Geography. While the strait is split roughly in the middle between Iran and Oman, the shipping lanes are predominantly in Omani waters. It’s because water on the Iranian side is said to be shallower, while on the Omani side, it is deeper and better suited for the movement of large oil tankers.

So, technically, ships could pass through Oman’s yard, which means Iran’s closure of its territory may not have a big impact on supplies.

“Most waterways are in Oman, not Iran,” Energy Market Expert Dr. Anas Alhajji said on X.

“Hormuz strait has never been blocked despite all wars – It cannot be blocked. Too wide. Well protected,” he added.

All things considered, the odds of Iran shutting the strait and choking off oil supplies are low. That said, an all-out war can still trigger widespread risk aversion, potentially driving bitcoin below the widely watched $60,000 support level.

Meanwhile, bitcoin’s price chart also signals a potential for deepening of the bear market ahead amid the Middle East crisis.

A Repeat Of February? Watch Out For These Bitcoin Price Levels In March

The Bitcoin price performance was quite disappointing over the past month. The flagship cryptocurrency has struggled to break sustainably above $70,000 throughout February, with prices only reaching $71,000 before facing sharp reversals.

It, then, becomes intuitively evident that this price region might be a key level acting as resistance to Bitcoin’s bullish attempts. Below are some other crucial levels to watch for in March and what they could potentially mean for the Bitcoin price.

BTC Realized Price Sits At $54,600 – What This Means

In a Quicktake post on the CryptoQuant platform, market analyst Burak Kesmeci highlighted five “cost clusters” that might reveal the next move for the Bitcoin price. For context, Cost clusters are essentially price levels that represent the average acquisition price of an asset (Bitcoin, in this case) by different investor cohorts

To start with, Kesmeci immediately revealed Bitcoin’s surest support price — the realized price — to be around the $54,600 mark. The realized price is a strong support region because it reflects the average cost basis of all the BTC in circulation.

Bitcoin PRICE

Source: CryptoQuant

Also, realized prices have historically served as long-term price support during bear phases. As a result, when the Bitcoin price trades above this level, it is often a sign of extant structural strength, while a break beneath the realized price is usually a sign of impending doom.

Bitcoin Could Switch Bullish In March — But On This Condition

While the Bitcoin price may be displaying its higher timeframe backing, it is also true that the world’s leading cryptocurrency has a series of battles to fight as it ascends. According to the crypto pundit, four resistance zones lie in wait to reject possible upward recovery.

The first of these zones is the 1 – 4-Week Realized Price, which reveals the average price at which recent buyers entered the BTC market. According to the highlighted CryptoQuant data, this cost basis stands at around the $71,600 level.

When the Bitcoin price trades beneath this level, it signals that the latest participants are under severe heat. Hence, recovery attempts towards this price level would typically be met with significant resistance, as this cohort would want to exit at break-even.

The analyst further highlighted that the Short-Term Holder Realized Price (STH RP) is around $90,800; this concerns investors who have held BTC for less than 155 days. If the Bitcoin price manages to overcome the evident resistance at this level, it could signal a change in Bitcoin’s trend from bearish to bullish.

Beyond the STH RP, the 365-day Simple Moving Average sits, occupying the $98,900 price level; then, a little more up North, the 3–6 Month Realized Price stands around $100,800. These metrics reflect the activity of Bitcoin’s medium-term holders, showing their realized price and average closing prices over the past year.

In the grand scheme, Bitcoin is clearly in a bearish phase. Thus, before March can stand as the pivotal month for market participants, BTC has to overcome those critical resistance levels. As of this writing, Bitcoin is valued at around $63,696, reflecting an over 5% decline in the past 24 hours.

Ethereum Tokens Swiped, Returned After South Korean Tax Service Publishes Wallet Seed Phrases

0

In brief

  • The South Korean National Tax Service (NTS) shared seed phrases from seized crypto wallets in a press release.
  • The contents of the wallets—valued around $4.8 million at face value—were then swiped, but returned.
  • The token was highly illiquid, and the perpetrator would not have been able to get anywhere near the face value.

The first rule of self-custodying crypto is that you do not tell anyone your seed phrase—a set of 12 or 24 words that unlocks the private key to the wallet, therefore enabling control of the digital assets inside.

South Korea’s National Tax Service (NTS) broke that rule in a very public fashion this week, publishing a photo of hand-written seed phrases in a press release and enabling an unidentified actor to make off with tokens valued at $4.8 million at face value, according to a local news report from Maeli Business Newspaper. But the highly illiquid tokens have since been returned.

The incident occurred after the NTS completed a search and seizure of high-value tax delinquents and subsequently photographed some of its haul to share in a press release. In that release, one individual’s lot, labeled as “Case 3,” included multiple Ledger hardware devices and their respective seed phrases, according to the report.

“This is like advertising to open your wallet and take your money,” Professor Cho Jae-woo of Hansung University told the publication.

Upon publication of the release, an individual did just that, pulling contents from at least three wallets into an Ethereum address ending in “86c12” before transferring them again.

On-chain data shows that three distinct addresses holding a total of 4 million Pre-Retogeum (PRTG)—valued at $4.8 million based on the token’s current price—were funded with a negligible amount of Ethereum to cover transaction fees before the user transferred their respective PRTG tokens to “86c12.”

The three addresses, which have not made any transactions since January 2023, held 40% of the total supply of the PRTG token—a defunct Ethereum-based token that boasts only 1,500 holders and 1,600 transfers all-time.

While initial reports noted the token’s $4.8 million face value, if the thief tried to sell these tokens, they would have not been able to recoup anywhere near that amount given very limited liquidity. The token lists no trading pairs on decentralized exchanges, and is only listed on one centralized exchange—MEXC—where it registered 24-hour volumes of only $332.

According to CoinGecko, the exchange’s liquidity for the PRTG-USDT trading pair is so small that only $59 in volume would send the price down 2%. For comparison, to move Bitcoin down 2% down on MEXC, a trader would need to sell around $2.6 million worth of the top crypto coin.

Perhaps that understanding is why on Friday morning, about 20 hours after initially moving the PRTG tokens, an address tied to the original “86c12” address transferred all the tokens back to their original wallets.

The hiccup is just the latest in a string of apparent crypto blunders for officials in South Korea. Earlier this week, it was discovered that $1.4 million in BTC went missing four years ago thanks to police not adhering to proper crypto custody guidelines.

Plus, South Korean regulators have come under fire after not finding an internal flaw in crypto exchange Bithumb’s system, which led to the firm erroneously distributing $43 billion worth of Bitcoin to users earlier this month rather than sending them small amounts of South Korean won.

Suspected insiders make over $1.2 million on Polymarket ahead of U.S. strike on Iran

0

Six Polymarket accounts earned roughly $1.2 million after correctly betting that the U.S. would strike Iran on Feb. 28, according to blockchain analytics firm Bubblemaps.

In a post on X, blockchain analyzer Bubblemaps said most of the wallets were funded within the last 24 hours before the attack and bought “Yes” shares in the “U.S. strikes Iran by February 28, 2026?” market just hours before explosions were reported in Tehran and other cities. The accounts had no activity beyond these predictions.

Suspected insiders (Bubblemaps)

The strikes followed a televised address by U.S. President Donald Trump announcing what he called “major combat operations,” targeting the country’s missile, naval, and nuclear infrastructure. The attack saw bitcoin’s price drop while oil futures on Hyperliquid rose.

One Polymarket account Bubblemaps pointed to purchased more than 560,000 “Yes” shares at about 10.8 cents each, a position that paid out near $560,000 after the market resolved at $1. Another account bought nearly 150,000 shares at 20 cents, turning a six-figure profit. All six profiles were created in February, according to Polymarket data.

Trading volume on the Feb. 28 contract reached nearly $90 million, part of more than $529 million wagered across related strike-date markets since December.

Bubblemaps published a visual map showing the six wallets clustered together and funded through similar paths.

Insider trading probes

The trades land as U.S. regulators weigh how to police insider activity on prediction markets. This week, rival platform Kalshi said it suspended and fined two users for insider trading, including a visual effects editor for MrBeast’s “Beast Games” who allegedly traded on knowledge of show outcomes.

Kalshi, which is registered with the Commodity Futures Trading Commission as a designated contract market, said it has investigated about 200 cases and has more than a dozen active probes.

The CFTC issued an advisory noting the enforcement actions and warned that insider trading on event contracts may violate U.S. law. Chairman Mike Selig called exchanges the “first line of defense.” Kalshi banned the employee for two years and fined him more than $20,000. In a separate case, a political candidate was penalized for betting on his own race.

More recently, Polymarket traders have appeared to insider trade a market on insider trading itself. Blockchain sleuth ZachXBT last week teased that he would publish the findings of an investigation into a crypto platform, which turned out to be Axiom, whose employees he believed used non-public information to trade.

Teasing the investigation was coming, however, led to the creation of a Polymarket contract on which company would be named. Some clearly knew the answer to which company was under investigation, with Lookonchain identifying 12 wallets that heavily bet on Axiom ahead of the reveal.

Dormant Bitcoin Reactivations Remain Measured Versus 2025

0

While bitcoin has been idling well beneath the $70,000 threshold, onchain metrics reveal that long-dormant wallets established between 2010 and 2017 have stirred to life in February, shifting 1,908.21 BTC value at just over $125 million through 69 separate transactions. Early Bitcoin Spending Activity Moderates Amid Lower Price Range This year, bitcoin prices have fallen […]
