Bitcoin rises 2.8% as global markets slump on Iran conflict and oil surge: Crypto Markets Today

0

Bitcoin rose 2.8% since midnight UTC after global markets plunged when futures trading opened an hour earlier.

Nasdaq 100 and S&P 500 index futures both fell more than 1.5% since midnight as oil surged to as high as $115 per barrel, the most since June 2022. Precious metals also suffered. Gold and silver lost 1.6% and 1.1% respectively, eroding the haven narrative as investors flocked to the U.S. dollar.

Sentiment for bitcoin, meanwhile, is warming, and it has remained resilient to the war in Iran and subsequent supply disruptions through the Strait of Hormuz.

“While BTC has yet to fully earn its digital gold narrative, its practical use case as a digital escape hatch is becoming increasingly relevant, particularly in Gulf countries, amid episodes of currency volatility and political uncertainty,” trading firm QCP said in a note on Monday.

Derivatives positioning

  • Exchanges have liquidated crypto futures bets worth nearly $400 million in 24 hours. Bearish bets on oil bore the brunt as prices for the so-called black gold rose to $115 per barrel.
  • Open interest (OI) in bitcoin futures remains steady near weekly lows of around 650K BTC, a sign the futures market is not participating in the Monday morning rally. OI in ether futures rose to 13 million ether.
  • XRP’s OI jumped to 1.72 billion tokens, the highest since Feb. 24, alongside a small uptick in SOL OI, both indicating capital inflows.
  • OI in PAXG, AVAX, LTC and several other alternative tokens has declined over 24 hours. Investors seem to be de-risking on the price bounce.
  • BTC and ETH’s 30-day implied volatility indexes remain steady, reflecting market calm amid chaos in Asian equities and oil markets.
  • On Deribit, bitcoin and ether puts continue to trade at a premium to calls, signaling persistent downside concerns. However, the premium remains largely unchanged from last week, suggesting the surge in oil prices hasn’t sparked an outsized demand for protective puts.
  • The BTC implied volatility term structure remains in backwardation, a sign traders are pricing higher volatility in the short term relative to the long term. That’s consistent with the unknowns of the war.

Token talk

  • The altcoin market was buoyant overnight with tokens including DASH, XMR and ZEC posting gains between 3.8% and 5.2%.
  • Decentralized finance (DeFi) tokens also performed well. ETHFI and MORPHO have both outperformed bitcoin and ether (ETH) since midnight.
  • CoinMarketCap’s “Altcoin Season” indicator is now at 36/100, significantly higher than February’s low of 22/100. A CoinDesk report on Friday suggested that the lack altcoin mentions on social media could be bullish in terms of a market reversal.
  • The best performing benchmark of the past 24 hours was CoinDesk’s Computing Select Index (CPUS), which includes chainlink and bittensor (TAO) and is up by 2.7%, followed by the CoinDesk Smart Contract Platform Select Index (SCPXC), which rose by 0.92% since Sunday morning.
  • On the flip side, institutional-focused token canton (CC) lost 3.4% of its value in the past 24 hours while , the token created by OpenAI co-founder Sam Altman, fell by around 2%.

Nigel Farage invests in UK BTC treasury firm Stack BTC

0

Nigel Farage, leader of the Reform UK party, invested 215,000 pounds ($286,000) in Stack BTC (STAK), a U.K.-listed bitcoin treasury company, in a fundraising round that also involved Blockchain.com.

In total, the company raised 260,000 by selling 5.2 million new shares at 5 pence each, it said on Monday. The new shares are expected to begin trading on the Aquis Growth Market on March 12.

Farage invested through his Thorn In The Side Ltd. company and will hold 6.31% of Stack following admission of the new shares. Farage said he has long supported bitcoin and believes the U.K. should position itself as a global hub for the crypto industry. Reform is leading in the polls, and has attempted to court the crypto vote by accepting donations in cryptocurrency.

“I have long been one of the UK’s few political advocates for Bitcoin,” he said in the statement, adding that London should continue to strengthen its role as a center for financial innovation.

Stack BTC is chaired by former Chancellor Kwasi Kwarteng, who said the investment aligns with the company’s goal of building a portfolio of cash-generative U.K. businesses while accumulating bitcoin as a treasury asset. It currently holds 21 BTC.

Blockchain.com will work with the company to develop its bitcoin treasury infrastructure and institutional-grade custody services.

Stack BTC shares rose 12% to 6.875 pence as of 9:30 a.m. in London.

Why Your Home’s Exterior Lighting May Be Its Most Underrated Feature

0

Home improvement conversations almost always focus on what happens inside. Kitchen renovations, bathroom updates, flooring replacements, and the steady accumulation of interior improvements that make a home more comfortable, more functional, and more valuable. The exterior tends to get attention in the form of landscaping, paint, and occasionally structural improvements like new windows or a new roof. What rarely gets the focused design attention it deserves is outdoor lighting, and the result is that most homes look dramatically less impressive after dark than the investment in the property would suggest they should.

The relationship between a home and outdoor lighting is different from most other home improvement categories because the results are invisible during the half of the day when you are looking at the home in natural light and only become apparent after sunset. This makes it easy to defer the investment indefinitely since the problem does not announce itself during daylight hours. Homeowners who work with Astoria Lighting Co on exterior architectural lighting projects consistently describe a version of the same experience: they drove past their house at night after the installation was complete and saw the property in a way they had never seen before.

Exterior architectural accent lighting is the category of outdoor lighting that most directly addresses the nighttime appearance of the home itself rather than the surrounding grounds or the seasonal decoration. It uses carefully placed fixtures to direct light onto the architectural features that define the character of the home’s exterior, creating the kind of nighttime presence that distinguishes properties with professional outdoor lighting from those without it.

How Architectural Lighting Works

The principle behind exterior architectural lighting is relatively simple even if the execution requires considerable expertise. Light placed at angles that reveal texture and form, directed at the features of the home that are most architecturally significant, creates a visual hierarchy after dark that draws attention to the home’s best features in the same way that good photography uses light to reveal the character of its subject.

A home with distinctive rooflines benefits from lighting that traces those lines and reveals their geometry against the night sky. A home with stone or brick exterior surfaces benefits from low-angle grazing light that reveals the texture of the material in ways that flat frontal lighting completely eliminates. A home with significant columns, arches, or entry features benefits from lighting that highlights those elements and establishes them as the visual focal points of the facade.

Grazing Light and Texture Revelation

One of the most important techniques in architectural accent lighting is grazing, where a fixture is placed close to a textured surface and directed at a very shallow angle across it. This technique is used on stone, brick, and textured stucco surfaces to reveal the three-dimensional character of the material after dark. The same stone facade that looks flat and uniform under soft ambient light becomes richly textured and visually complex under well-placed grazing light.

This is a technique that most DIY outdoor lighting approaches never employ, primarily because it requires precise fixture positioning and angle adjustment that are difficult to achieve without professional installation equipment and experience. The difference in results between grazing light applied correctly and any other approach to lighting the same surface is immediately visible and consistently impressive.

Soffit and Downlighting Applications

Outdoor LED soffit lighting represents a category that has grown significantly with the development of low-profile LED fixture technology. Fixtures integrated into roof soffits and exterior overhangs create downlighting effects that wash the exterior walls of the home in light from above, creating a different visual quality than uplighting from grade level and complementing it in a well-designed system that uses both approaches.

Soffit-integrated fixtures have a particular advantage in terms of aesthetics: because they are recessed into the soffit material, they are essentially invisible during daylight hours while providing significant light output after dark. This means the exterior appearance of the home is not affected by the presence of visible lighting hardware, which is one of the recurring aesthetic concerns with surface-mounted exterior fixtures that are visible as objects on the facade during the day.

The Property Value Case for Exterior Lighting

The connection between professional outdoor lighting and property value is well-supported by real estate market data and by the practical experience of homeowners who have listed properties with and without professional exterior lighting. Curb appeal is a known driver of buyer interest and first impression at both the physical property visit and in online listing photography, and nighttime curb appeal created by professional outdoor lighting is a distinguishing feature that stands out clearly in listing photographs and during evening viewings.

The return on investment calculation for outdoor lighting is favorable compared to many other exterior home improvement categories. The cost of professional outdoor lighting installation is modest relative to larger renovations, and the impact on perceived property quality and actual market appeal is disproportionately large. A property that presents impressively after dark in a neighborhood where most homes are invisible or unremarkable at night has a genuine competitive advantage in the market.

Beyond the transaction value dimension, professional outdoor lighting improves the daily experience of the property for the people who live there. Coming home to a well-lit home after dark is a meaningfully different experience than arriving at an unlit one. The home feels welcoming, well-maintained, and cared for in a way that extends to how residents feel about the property on an ongoing basis rather than only at the moment of a transaction.

Getting Started With Exterior Architectural Lighting

The first step in any exterior architectural lighting project is a property assessment that identifies the features of the home’s exterior that are most worth illuminating and the angles and approaches that will produce the best results for each. This is work that benefits from an experienced eye, because the most effective lighting placements are not always obvious from a walking inspection of the property and the interaction between multiple lighting elements requires the kind of holistic design thinking that produces unified results rather than a collection of individually placed fixtures.

Astoria Lighting Co brings this design-first approach to every exterior architectural lighting project, starting from the property’s specific characteristics and the homeowner’s goals rather than from a standardized product set. The result is exterior lighting that enhances what is already distinctive about the home rather than imposing a generic lighting solution that could apply to any property.

The conversation about what a home looks like after dark is worth having. For most properties, the answer to that question is currently much less impressive than the investment in the property deserves, and the path to changing that answer is more straightforward and more affordable than most homeowners assume before they begin exploring it.

Aave Users Reach Record as Traders Quietly Shift Capital Toward DeFi Lending

0

In brief

  • Aave’s monthly active users hit an all-time high of ~155,000 in February, up roughly 100% in six months.
  • The surge was driven by rising ETH supply rates and the collapse of the basis trade, analysts say.
  • The Aave Chan Initiative, one of Aave’s most influential governance groups, announced its shutdown last week after a transparency dispute with Aave Labs.

Monthly active users on DeFi lending protocol Aave reached roughly 155,000 in February, marking an all-time high and nearly doubling over the past six months.

The rise in users comes as investors increasingly seek yield through decentralized lending protocols, according to on-chain analytics platform Token Terminal data.

Sean Dawson, head of research at on-chain options platform Derive, told Decrypt that market dynamics appeared to be the primary driver behind the swelling of users.

“The largest trade in crypto, the basis trade, has collapsed in recent months,” Dawson said. “Users used to be able to earn 10–30% or just by holding sUSDe, now this is less than 4%.”

Broader structural shifts in crypto trading strategies are also pushing capital toward lending platforms, he said.

“Consequently, users have few places to park funds that are low risk—this makes lending the only remaining option,” he added.

Peter Chung, head of research at Presto Labs, told Decrypt that Aave’s long-standing role in decentralized finance infrastructure likely explains the continued growth in its user base.

“DeFi firms are largely experimental, but a select few have firmly established themselves as a critical onchain finance infrastructure,” Chung said. “Aave is one of them. They have gone through some governance changes recently, but not sure there is any causality there.”

The rise in user activity comes amid governance tension within the Aave ecosystem.

Last week, the Aave Chan Initiative (ACI) said it would wind down, alleging that addresses tied to Aave Labs, including a 111,000 AAVE delegation from founder Stani Kulechov, helped swing the “Aave Will Win” temperature check, a $51 million funding proposal that passed with 52.58% support.

ACI founder Marc Zeller said stripping those votes would have flipped the result, while the group’s own exit post cited “no role for an independent service provider” when the largest budget recipient can influence its own approval.

The departure follows BGD Labs, the team behind Aave’s V3 codebase, which also stepped away over strategic disagreements with Aave Labs, leaving two major contributors gone in quick succession.

Despite the governance turmoil, lending and borrowing activity on the protocol continues to operate normally.

Aave currently holds nearly $27 billion in total value locked across 20 blockchains, making it the dominant DeFi lending protocol by a wide margin, according to DeFiLlama data.

AAVE, the protocol’s governance token, is trading around $107, down about 0.7% over the past 24 hours and roughly 83.8% below its 2021 all-time high of $661, according to CoinGecko data.

Looking ahead, Dawson said the protocol’s growth will depend on whether lending activity continues expanding.

“Continued growth on TVL is the main metric I’d look at,” he said, adding that stability of rates without large deposits or withdrawals in the coming months will also be an important signal for the protocol’s trajectory.

IsDBI Secures US Patent for Novel ‘Proof-of-Use’ Blockchain Mechanism

0

The Islamic Development Bank Institute (IsDBI) was granted Patent No. 12,548,031 B2 by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) on 10 February 2026.

This milestone represents the Institute’s second USPTO patent and itsz fifth patent overall. According to the IsDBI, the achievement reinforces its position as a leader in fintech innovation for economic development and Islamic finance. The patent protects an original method for achieving consensus within Distributed Ledger Technology (DLT) and blockchain networks, introducing a paradigm shift in how transactions are validated and secured.

A shift toward reciprocity in blockchain consensus

In any blockchain system, the consensus algorithm acts as a core component, determining how the network agrees on valid transactions, their order, and the overall integrity of the shared ledger without relying on a central authority.

The IsDBI’s newly patented Proof-of-Use (PoU) mechanism introduces a reciprocity-based approach. Under this system, participants validate the transactions of others in exchange for having their own transactions validated. This model aligns network influence directly with actual participation, rather than basing it on computational power or capital.

According to the Institute, this reciprocity principle is particularly suitable for development finance. It actively prevents the network from being captured by outside speculators whose primary objective is the reward for validation rather than the transactions themselves.

How Proof-of-Use compares to traditional models

Unlike traditional consensus models such as Proof-of-Work (PoW) and Proof-of-Stake (PoS), Proof-of-Use is built fundamentally on the principle of reciprocity. This creates a unique network environment characterised by several key advantages:

  • Users and Validators are One: Only active participants who use the network have the right to validate members’ transactions. This contrasts with PoW and PoS models, where validators and users are distinct groups that often have divergent objectives.
  • Environmental Sustainability: By eliminating the competitive “arms race” found in PoW algorithms, the PoU model removes the feedback loops that drive extensive energy consumption.
  • Fairness and Equity: PoU addresses the inherent bias present in PoS models, which often favor participants holding the largest financial stakes. Through reciprocity, PoU prioritizes utility and participation over wealth concentration.
Strategic vision for inclusive growth

Dr. Sami Al-Suwailem, acting director general of the IsDB Institute, highlighted the strategic importance of the new patent: “The Proof-of-Use mechanism is an important component of the Institute’s innovation portfolio. Our objective is to build a digital ecosystem to support inclusive growth and shared prosperity across Member Countries and communities.”

He added: “We are actively exploring strategic partnerships to capitalize on the innovative ecosystem, in line with the IsDB Group’s 10-Year Strategic Framework, which calls for enhancing Islamic digital financial services to ensure broader access to finance.”

Saylor Signals Another Bitcoin Buy Amid Market Downturn

0

Michael Saylor, the co-founder of Bitcoin (BTC) treasury company Strategy, indicated on Sunday that the firm is buying more BTC, as the price hovers near the $66,000 level.

“The Second Century Begins,” Saylor said on X, as he shared the Strategy BTC accumulation chart that has become synonymous with impending BTC purchases.

Strategy’s most recent BTC purchase occurred during the last week of February, when the company bought 3,015 BTC for more than $204 million, bringing its total holdings to 720,737 BTC, valued at about $48.1 billion using market prices at the time of publication.

The price of Bitcoin is currently below Strategy’s average purchase cost of about $75,985 per BTC, according to data from SaylorTracker.

The company continues to accumulate BTC through debt and equity financing, even amid a broad market downturn and a collapse in net asset values (NAVs) for Treasury companies.

Strategy’s basic NAV is just below 1, according to the company, meaning it is trading at a discount to its BTC treasury.

2026 may be the year of consolidation for crypto treasury companies, but Saylor isn’t buying

The digital asset treasury market could consolidate in 2026, as companies with operating businesses that generate cash flow will buy up treasury companies that simply accumulate BTC, according to Wojciech Kaszycki, chief strategy officer of treasury company BTCS.

“If you consolidate with another player, sometimes two plus two equals six or more, you can win faster, because everybody in this market trading below net asset value is struggling,” he told Cointelegraph.

Crypto treasury companies can provide validation services for blockchain networks, mine cryptocurrencies, offer private or public credit instruments, or start any business unrelated to digital assets to generate revenue, he added.

Saylor has dismissed the idea of buying up competitors or distressed BTC treasury companies, citing financial uncertainty as the main reason for avoiding mergers and acquisitions.

“These things tend to stretch out six to nine months or a year,” he said. “An idea that looks good when you start might not still be a good idea six months later,” he added.
