Ripple Seeks Australian Financial License to ‘Scale’ Payments Across the Region

0

In brief

  • Ripple plans to secure an Australian Financial Services License by acquiring BC Payments.
  • APAC payments volume nearly doubled in 2025, with several Australian firms already using the platform.
  • Expansion raises questions about blockchain settlement inside regulated banking systems.

Ripple said Tuesday it is seeking an Australian Financial Services License through the acquisition of BC Payments, a move that would place the crypto firm within Australia’s regulated financial services framework.

The license will allow Ripple to oversee settlement, connect customers with local payout partners, and route transactions through a single integration rather than multiple intermediaries.

“Australia is a key market for Ripple,” and the license will help strengthen its  “ability to scale,” Fiona Murray, managing director for Asia Pacific at Ripple, said in a statement.

Its payments platform will also manage the full cycle of cross-border transactions, including onboarding, compliance, funding, foreign exchange, liquidity management, and final payout, while connecting traditional banking rails to digital assets.

If approved, it would also expand Ripple’s regulated footprint in Asia-Pacific and add to the company’s more than 75 regulatory licences worldwide.

Ripple said its APAC payments volume nearly doubled year-over-year in 2025 and that it already works with Australian firms, including Hai Ha Money Transfer, Stables, law firm Caleb & Brown, Flash Payments, and crypto exchange Independent Reserve.

But even with that growth, the expansion raises a broader question for the sector over whether blockchain-based settlement will appear directly in regulated payment flows or remain behind existing banking and correspondent networks.

Game changer?

Local observers say the license could help crypto payment infrastructure gain traction in regulated finance, though adoption will depend on regulation, competition, and clear advantages over existing rails.

The license is a “game changer” and “a possible template of how crypto could enter mainstream usage,” Kartik Swaminathan, lead contributor at crypto fintech firm Demether, told Decrypt.

While it brings legitimacy, how the Treasury and Australian Securities and Investments Commission view crypto may be “slow to evolve and crystallize into clear processes for Ripple to follow,” Swaminathan said.

“Consumers are agnostic to tech, so new products need to be faster and or cheaper to win,” he said. “While Ripple has the tech, competition from multiple Australian stablecoin offerings is emerging. Distribution may well decide the winner.”

Securing an AFSL matters because “it gives crypto payments a better shot at competing where traditional rails remain weakest: cross-border settlement, treasury movement and global liquidity orchestration,” Joshua Murchie, founder of investment firm Sympatheia, told Decrypt.

“It does not replace Australia’s domestic payment infrastructure tomorrow, because the country already has strong local rails,” Murchie said. “But it does strengthen the case for regulated blockchain-based payment infrastructure as a serious institutional alternative in higher-friction parts of the market.”

For Australian consumers, the main risk could be “confusion around protections,” Jonathan Inglis, CEO of Melbourne-based consumer research firm Protocol Theory, told Decrypt.

The license could “accelerate the integration of crypto-based payment rails into mainstream finance,” with 35% of adults in the country saying they would be interested in crypto trading through their main bank, Inglis said.

At the same time, Inglis noted that 47% of Australians who do not currently use crypto say “better education would increase their willingness to engage,” which suggests that “potential users still lack a clear understanding of the products entering the financial system.”

Friction remains between crypto services and banks, with 12% of Australian crypto users reporting banking restrictions, compared with 8% of the general population, according to Protocol Theory data.

Economic impact analysis highlights millions in potential savings for hospitals using etiometry platform

0

Healthcare institutions utilizing Etiometry’s AI-driven clinical intelligence platform could see greater than 2X ROI in the first year and over $2 million in annual savings

Etiometry, a leader in AI-driven clinical intelligence, released findings from a recent economic impact analysis highlighting the significant benefits of AI tools like the Etiometry Platform in improving outcomes and resource allocation in hospitals for critically ill patients. By leveraging advanced analytics and AI-powered insights, the platform empowers care teams to detect subtle changes in patient conditions, prevent complications, and improve recovery times, all leading to improved patient outcomes and reduced healthcare costs.

The economic impact estimates were generated using the Etiometry ROI tool, which leverages published clinical outcomes data and standardized healthcare cost assumptions. The analysis models a hospital with several intensive care units (ICUs) totaling 100 beds, offering a review of the potential economic value delivered by Etiometry.

The analysis demonstrates the following economic value of using Etiometry’s clinical decision support platform:

  • ~ 200% return on investment (ROI) in year one
  • ~ $2 million in annual savings
  • More than $20,000 saved per ICU bed/year
  • $3,541 – $9,109 estimated savings per patient

Cost savings are largely driven by reduced length of stay (LOS) and time on mechanical ventilation, with the added upside of freeing capacity to increase throughput and revenue. Extended LOS continues to be a significant challenge and critical metric for hospitals across the United States, putting pressure on margins and heightening clinical risk, particularly in the ICU where missed opportunities to escalate or de-escalate care in a timely manner can delay recovery and place further strain on hospital finances. According to Vizient subsidiary Sg2’s 2024 “Impact of Change” report, high-acuity hospital stays, which are the most resource-intensive, are increasing and projected to continue rising 13% by 2034, driven by the aging population and increase in comorbidities.

“With a potential cost savings of millions of dollars per year, the economic value of Etiometry’s solution is immense, and provides mutual benefit to both patients and hospitals,” said Shane Cooke, president and CEO of Etiometry. “Leveraging proven clinical analytics AI tools that demonstrate reducing LOS safely and effectively even a modest amount per patient can rapidly deliver substantial financial benefit across a hospital’s annual case volume.”

As the provider of the only commercially available solution that empowers care teams to make timely, data-driven decisions, detect subtle changes in patient conditions and improve outcomes, the Etiometry Platform has multiple FDA-cleared risk indices and clinical outcomes data that show how the platform is associated with reduced LOS.

Etiometry personalizes each patient’s optimal recovery based on their diagnosis and procedures, continuously monitoring the patient’s trajectory using advanced AI algorithms developed by and exclusively available through the Etiometry Platform. Through automated care pathways, the platform assesses patient status in real time to identify when to escalate or de-escalate care, which may notify the clinical team or flag when hospital-defined criteria are met to prompt timely review. This approach has demonstrated significant improvements in both patient outcomes and financial performance, helping hospitals optimize care steps and ultimately move patients through their systems more efficiently.1

Etiometry’s AI platform is already trusted at scale, helping health systems reduce LOS and ICU LOS. More than 50 leading hospitals using Etiometry across 3,500+ beds in roughly 150 ICUs spanning pediatric, academic and adult health systems, have reported:

  • 36% reduction in ICU length of stay
  • 41% reduction in ICU readmissions
  • 30% less time on mechanical ventilation
  • 29% decrease in vasoactive support
  • 88% of nurses say it makes their jobs easier

With 10 FDA clearances, automated clinical pathways that support hospital-defined protocols and quality improvement analysis, Etiometry is harnessing the power of AI and advanced analytics to transform how hospitals treat complex patients.

Jito Foundation acquires and revives SolanaFloor following shutdown over $27 million exploit

0

The Jito Foundation announced its acquisition of SolanaFloor, a data platform and news site focused on the Solana blockchain, and plans to relaunch the publication after its recent shutdown.

SolanaFloor ceased operations last month after an $27 million exploit involving its parent organization, Step Finance. The team considered external financing and acquisition but was unable to continue operating the platform.

Jito stepped in to bring the site back online but did not reveal the acquisition value. The foundation said SolanaFloor will resume publishing immediately while maintaining editorial independence. The newsroom will continue covering network activity, market movements and technical development across the Solana ecosystem.

“When SolanaFloor went dark, the ecosystem lost something difficult to replace,” said Brian Smith, president of Jito Foundation. He described the acquisition as a commitment to supporting information infrastructure that enables market participants to understand onchain developments.

The relaunch comes as the Solana network remains resilient. Spot exchange-traded funds tied to the token now hold nearly $1 billion in assets, while total value locked on the network’s DeFi ecosystem is at $6.7 billion.

Jito itself plays a role in Solana’s infrastructure. The project develops software used by validators to manage transaction ordering and capture maximum extractable value, or MEV, a form of additional revenue that can arise during block production.

The network also runs a liquid staking system that allows users to deposit SOL and receive a token called JitoSOL that remains usable across decentralized finance applications while still earning staking rewards.

Under the new ownership, SolanaFloor’s editorial team will retain control over story selection and coverage priorities. Jito stated that details about the platform’s team, partnerships, and commercial offerings will be provided as the relaunch progresses.

Polymarket Teams Up With Palantir and TWG AI to Monitor Sports Bets

0

The prediction market is deploying AI-powered surveillance tools as the industry faces mounting scrutiny over insider trading and market manipulation.

Prediction market Polymarket has partnered with Palantir Technologies and TWG AI to develop a surveillance system designed to detect manipulation and insider trading across its sports markets.

The new platform will be powered by the Vergence AI engine, a joint venture between Palantir and TWG AI created last year. It will monitor trading activity in real time, flag anomalous patterns, screen users against existing banned-bettor lists, and generate compliance reports that can be shared with regulators and sports leagues.

“Our partnership with Palantir and TWG AI allows us to apply world-class analytics and monitoring to sports markets while building tools that can help leagues and teams maintain confidence in the games themselves,” said Polymarket founder and CEO Shayne Coplan in a press release.

Palantir CEO Alex Karp called the collaboration a new standard for prediction markets, adding that the companies are working to ensure the platform can scale as the sector expands.

The partnership comes as interest in sports betting on prediction markets continues to rise.

Meanwhile, Polymarket trading volumes hit an all-time high of $3.55 billion in February, marking a sixth straight month of growth, according to DeFiLlama.

Solana ETFs find institutional backing while XRP funds depend more on retail

0

U.S. exchange-traded funds tied to Solana (SOL) and XRP (XRP) are attracting investors despite falling crypto prices, though the two products are drawing very different types of buyers.

Solana ETFs are seeing stronger participation from institutional crypto investors, while XRP funds appear to rely more heavily on retail demand, according to a new report from Bloomberg Intelligence analysts James Seyffart and Sharoon Francis.

“Early Solana ETF demand is being driven largely by industry-native capital rather than broader institutional adoption,” the analysts wrote about Solana ETFs.

About 49% of assets in U.S. spot Solana ETFs were identifiable through 13F filings as of Dec. 31, a regulatory disclosure required for large institutional investment managers. Investment advisers accounted for the largest share of reported holdings, with roughly $270 million in exposure. Hedge funds followed with about $186 million.

“The early holder base remains top-heavy and skewed toward crypto-focused investment firms and market makers, suggesting broader institutional participation is still building,” the analysts wrote. The largest known holders include Electric Capital, Goldman Sachs and Elequin Capital.

Solana is a blockchain network designed to support decentralized applications such as trading platforms, lending services and NFT marketplaces. The network aims to process transactions quickly and cheaply, making it a popular platform for crypto trading and decentralized finance.

Some of the initial capital likely reflects investors shifting existing Solana exposure into the ETF structure rather than entirely new buying. Still, the data suggests that does not explain the full picture. Because about half of the ETF assets are disclosed through 13F filings, even assuming those positions represented swapped exposure would leave a significant share of inflows coming from new buyers.

Solana ETFs have attracted $173 million in net inflows so far in 2026, even as the token has fallen sharply. The report notes that cumulative inflows into the funds have reached about $1.45 billion since launch. That is about 2.5% of the amount that spot bitcoin ETFs have amassed, but it is still a relatively strong figure for such young products.

The products debuted during a difficult market environment. Solana has dropped more than 50% since October, when new spot ETFs launched under the Securities Act of 1933.

Some common ETF trading strategies also appear limited. Futures basis yields — often used by hedge funds to run arbitrage trades — have compressed, leaving fewer incentives for those positions. “With basis yields now compressed, hedge funds and market makers have little incentive to enter new positions in spot Solana ETFs,” the analysts wrote.

XRP ETFs present a different ownership pattern.

Only about 16% of XRP ETF assets were identifiable through 13F filings at the end of December, suggesting a smaller institutional footprint. Advisers again led among disclosed holders with about $165 million in exposure, while hedge funds accounted for around $37 million.

The remaining shares are likely held by investors who do not file 13Fs, including retail buyers.

“We believe a large portion are held by retail investors, who aren’t required to file 13Fs,” according to the report.

XRP is the native token used on the XRP Ledger, a blockchain focused on payments and cross-border money transfers. The network is designed to help financial institutions move funds between countries quickly and at a lower cost than traditional banking rails.

Despite that retail tilt, XRP ETFs have gathered significant assets. The funds attracted more than $1.4 billion in the six weeks after launching in November and have largely held those gains into 2026, even with XRP down about 26% this year.

The analysts said the stability in assets despite weaker futures activity suggests demand may reflect direct market views rather than derivatives-driven arbitrage.

“ETF assets have largely held their gains, suggesting demand may become increasingly directional rather than mechanical,” they wrote.

Together, the findings show how newer crypto ETFs are still developing their investor bases.

While bitcoin funds have drawn broad institutional adoption, Solana and XRP products appear to be carving out different paths as the market matures, with Solana attracting more crypto-native institutional capital and XRP drawing a larger share of retail investors.

Markets tread water as investors brace for inflation data

0

The entire financial market spent Tuesday doing its best impression of a doctor’s waiting room. Everyone sat still, no one made eye contact, and the only real activity was nervous fidgeting over what comes next.

US equities barely registered a pulse. The S&P 500 dipped 0.2%, oil prices couldn’t decide whether to surge or collapse, and crypto — somewhat surprisingly — caught a mild bid. Bitcoin edged past $70K, Ethereum held above $2K, and the broader digital asset market drifted higher even as traditional finance stayed frozen in place.

What the numbers actually say

Here’s the scorecard. Bitcoin gained 1.4% over 24 hours and 2.6% on the week, trading just above the $70K level that has become its psychological floor. Ethereum added a modest 1.0% on the day, holding comfortably above $2K. Solana ticked up 0.6%, trading near $86, and XRP sat around $1.39.

Those are not the kind of moves that make anyone rich overnight. But in context, they’re noteworthy.

The crypto Fear and Greed Index, which measures market sentiment on a scale of 0 to 100, currently reads 15. That’s “Extreme Fear” — the kind of reading you typically see after a major crash or during prolonged uncertainty. Last week it was even lower, at 10.

To put that in perspective, the index hit similar levels during the FTX collapse in November 2022 and the Terra/Luna implosion earlier that year. The fact that Bitcoin is trading near $70K while sentiment sits at crash-era lows is a disconnect worth paying attention to.

In one oddly specific corner of the market, the top-performing crypto category over seven days was US Treasury-backed stablecoins, which surged 39.1%. In English: investors are parking money in the digital equivalent of government bonds. That’s not exactly a vote of confidence in risk-taking.

Why everyone is staring at the CPI report

The Consumer Price Index report is one of the most closely watched economic releases in the US. It measures how fast prices are rising for everyday goods and services — food, rent, gas, the stuff people actually buy.

Why does it matter so much right now? Because the Federal Reserve uses inflation data to decide whether to cut, hold, or raise interest rates. And interest rate expectations drive virtually everything in both traditional and crypto markets.

If CPI comes in hotter than expected, it signals inflation is stickier than hoped. That makes rate cuts less likely, which tends to hurt risk assets like stocks and crypto. The logic is straightforward: higher rates mean money is more expensive to borrow, which means less capital flowing into speculative investments.

If CPI comes in cooler, the calculus flips. Lower inflation gives the Fed room to cut rates, which historically acts like rocket fuel for asset prices across the board. Bitcoin’s biggest rallies have often coincided with periods of monetary easing or the expectation of it.

The market’s paralysis on Tuesday was essentially a collective refusal to place bets before seeing the data. Traders have been burned enough times by surprise inflation prints that they’d rather sit on their hands than guess wrong.

Adding to the tension, geopolitical uncertainty continues to simmer. Oil prices have been swinging between record highs and sharp pullbacks, a pattern that typically injects volatility into inflation expectations. Higher oil means higher transportation and production costs, which can push CPI readings higher even if underlying demand is softening.

What this means for crypto investors

Here’s the thing about crypto trading at these levels during extreme fear: it creates an asymmetric setup. The sentiment is priced for disaster, but the actual price action hasn’t followed suit.

Bitcoin holding above $70K while the Fear and Greed Index reads 15 suggests that the sellers who wanted out have mostly already left. The remaining holders are either long-term believers or institutions with mandates that don’t change based on weekly vibes. That kind of base can be surprisingly resilient.

The risk, of course, is that a hot CPI print triggers a genuine selloff. If the report shows inflation reaccelerating, the market’s rate-cut hopes could evaporate quickly. Bitcoin has historically dropped 5-10% on hawkish surprises from the Fed or unexpectedly high inflation data. From $70K, that would mean a potential test of the $63K-$66K range.

On the flip side, a cool print could be the catalyst that breaks the fear cycle. When sentiment is this depressed, even mildly positive news can trigger outsized moves higher. Markets that are positioned for the worst tend to rip when the worst doesn’t materialize.

The Treasury-backed stablecoin trend is also worth monitoring as a leading indicator. When investors rotate heavily into yield-bearing stablecoins, it often signals they’re waiting on the sidelines with dry powder. That capital doesn’t disappear — it tends to redeploy when conditions shift. Think of it as a coiled spring rather than a permanent exit.

Ethereum’s relative stability above $2K is another data point that matters for the broader ecosystem. ETH often acts as a bellwether for altcoin sentiment. If it holds this level through the CPI release, it could provide a floor for the rest of the market. If it breaks below, expect the pain to cascade through DeFi protocols and Layer 2 tokens.

The competitive dynamic between chains also plays into this. Solana near $86 represents a significant discount from its highs, and its ecosystem activity has remained robust even as price action stagnated. XRP at $1.39 continues to reflect the market’s ongoing recalibration of Ripple’s position following its partial legal victories.

For investors trying to navigate this environment, the key question isn’t whether inflation will be high or low. It’s whether the market has already priced in the worst-case scenario. With a Fear and Greed reading of 15, the argument that bad news is largely baked in carries some weight — but it’s never a guarantee.

Bottom line: The market is in a holding pattern, and the CPI report will likely break the stalemate one way or another. Crypto’s quiet climb during peak uncertainty and rock-bottom sentiment is either a sign of underlying strength or the calm before a storm. The data drops soon. Until then, everyone waits.

Vitalik Buterin pushes ‘DVT-Lite’ to make validator setup easier

0

The Ethereum Foundation is testing a method for running validators that could make it significantly easier for institutions holding large amounts of ether to set up staking infrastructure, widening the pool of participants and creating a more decentralized network.

In a post on X, blockchain co-founder Vitalik Buterin said the foundation is using a simplified version of distributed validator technology, or “DVT-lite,” to stake 72,000 ETH. The experiment aims to make running validators across multiple machines less complicated.

Buterin said the goal is to reduce the process to something close to a one-click setup, where operators choose which computers will run validator nodes, launch the software and enter the same key on each machine. The system would then automatically connect the nodes and begin staking.

“My hope for this project is that we can make it maximally easy and one-click to do distributed staking for institutions,” Buterin wrote.

Running Ethereum validators today typically means operating a single node that holds the key used to sign blocks and participate in the network. If that machine fails or goes offline, the validator can stop working and may be penalized.

Distributed validator technology (DVT) changes that by allowing multiple independent machines to collectively act as a single validator. Instead of relying on one key and one computer, several nodes work together and only a handful of them sign for the validator to function. That means the validator can keep operating even if some machines go down.

But existing DVT systems can be complicated to deploy because operators must coordinate networking, keys and communication between nodes. Buterin has previously argued that complexity is one reason large staking providers have come to dominate the ecosystem.

The “DVT-lite” setup aims to automate much of that process, making it easier for institutions to run distributed validators with minimal infrastructure expertise.

Buterin said he plans to use the system himself and hopes large ETH holders will adopt similar setups, helping spread control of Ethereum’s staking infrastructure across more operators rather than concentrating it among a handful of professional providers.

“The idea that ‘running infrastructure’ is this scary, complicated thing where each person participating must be a ‘professional’ is awful and anti-decentralization, and we must attack it directly,” he wrote.

The Importance of SEO for Businesses in Saskatoon

0

In today’s competitive digital landscape, simply having a website is not enough. Businesses must ensure their websites are visible to potential customers who are searching online for products and services. This is where search engine optimization (SEO) becomes essential. SEO helps websites rank higher on search engines like Google, making it easier for people to discover businesses when they need them most.

For local companies, SEO is especially important because it connects them directly with customers in their area. When people search for services online, they often include location-based keywords. Businesses that invest in professional SEO Saskatoon strategies can significantly improve their visibility in local search results and attract more qualified traffic to their websites.

What Is Search Engine Optimization?

Search engine optimization is the process of improving a website’s structure, content, and authority so that it performs better in search engine results pages. When a website is optimized properly, search engines can easily understand its content and determine its relevance to users’ search queries.

SEO involves a variety of techniques including keyword optimization, technical improvements, content creation, and link building. Each of these elements works together to increase a website’s chances of appearing higher in search results. The higher a website ranks, the more likely users are to click on it.

Why Local SEO Matters

Local SEO focuses on improving visibility for businesses that serve specific geographic areas. For example, when someone searches for services in Saskatoon, search engines prioritize businesses that are relevant to that location.

By optimizing a website for local search terms, businesses can reach customers who are actively looking for their services nearby. This targeted approach often leads to higher-quality traffic because visitors are already interested in what the business offers.

Local SEO strategies may include optimizing Google Business profiles, using location-based keywords, and ensuring consistent business information across online directories. These steps help search engines verify the legitimacy and relevance of a business.

Increasing Website Traffic

One of the main benefits of SEO is the ability to attract organic traffic. Unlike paid advertisements, organic traffic comes from search engine results without ongoing advertising costs. Once a website achieves strong rankings, it can continue to generate traffic for an extended period.

High-quality SEO focuses on creating valuable content that answers users’ questions and provides helpful information. When visitors find useful content on a website, they are more likely to stay longer, explore other pages, and potentially become customers.

Building Trust and Credibility

Websites that appear at the top of search results often gain more trust from users. Many people believe that higher-ranking websites are more reliable and authoritative. Because of this perception, strong search engine rankings can significantly improve a company’s credibility.

SEO also encourages businesses to maintain high-quality websites with fast loading speeds, mobile-friendly designs, and well-organized content. These factors not only improve search rankings but also enhance the overall user experience.

Long-Term Business Growth

SEO is not a one-time effort but a long-term strategy that continues to deliver results over time. As a website gains authority and improves its rankings, it becomes easier to attract consistent traffic and generate leads.

Businesses that invest in effective SEO strategies can stay ahead of competitors and build a strong online presence. Over time, this visibility can lead to increased brand recognition, more customer inquiries, and higher revenue.

Conclusion

In the digital age, search engine optimization is a critical component of any successful online strategy. It helps businesses improve their search visibility, attract relevant traffic, and build credibility with potential customers. By focusing on effective SEO practices, businesses in Saskatoon can strengthen their online presence and connect with more people searching for their services.

CFTC Chair Michael Selig Outlines DeFi, Prediction Market Rulemaking Plans

0

Calling the U.S. the “crypto capital of the world,” Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) Chairman Mike Selig updated his agency’s ongoing plans to provide long-awaited regulatory clarity for decentralized finance (DeFi) developers, crypto derivatives and prediction markets.

Speaking this week at the FIA Global Cleared Markets Conference in Boca Raton, Florida, Selig said the U.S. is reclaiming leadership in digital assets through closer coordination between regulators. He said he and the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) Chairman Paul Atkins have put an “end to the days of CFTC-SEC infighting by partnering on the Project Crypto initiative.”

During his speech, Selig reiterated the CFTC will issue guidance to clarify how prediction markets, known as event contracts in regulation, can list and trade products under U.S. law and will launch a rulemaking process seeking public input on how the fast-growing sector should be overseen. Prediction markets are no longer a niche and have become a fast-growing ecosystem of trading platforms that allow users to trade contracts tied to elections, economic outcomes and real-world events.

Selig said that because “market participants deserve clarity” the agency intends to assert a more active role in regulating these markets and defending its authority over them amid ongoing legal challenges from several U.S. states. He repeated his sentiment from last month that the CFTC must be seen as the regulator for these markets, and he “will continue to assess litigation strategies to make sure the agency’s voice is heard.”

DeFi developers and crypto derivatives

The CFTC, he said, also plans to address one of the crypto industry’s most contentious regulatory questions: “For too long, there has been an open question as to whether software providers trigger the CFTC’s registration requirements,” Selig said. “We intend to address this question head-on.”

The agency is also analyzing how U.S. law should treat several crypto trading structures that have historically operated in regulatory gray areas, including leveraged crypto spot trading and standards for margined spot trading on exchanges. Previous Acting Chairman Caroline Pham got started last year on erasing old guidance on “actual delivery” standards from President Donald Trump’s first term so the regulator could write something friendlier to the industry spot-market practices.

The agency has also been addressing the classification of crypto perpetual derivatives, a dominant product in global crypto markets.

The CFTC chairman also pointed to the rise of artificial intelligence (AI) and automated trading systems across digital markets and the need for regulatory frameworks that support innovation in these technologies.

Selig’s comments echo recent statements by NEAR co-founder Illia Polosukhin, who said AI agents will soon be the primary blockchain users, and Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong, who wrote on X that “very soon there are going to be more AI agents than humans making transactions.”

How Long Will Final 1M Take?

0

Trusted Editorial content, reviewed by leading industry experts and seasoned editors. Ad Disclosure

20 million coins out of Bitcoin’s 21 million supply cap have now been mined. Here’s how long it will take for the remaining tokens to hit circulation.

Bitcoin Supply Reaches 20 Million Milestone After 6,267 Days

In a new post on X, on-chain analytics firm Glassnode has discussed the latest milestone achieved by the Bitcoin network: more than 20 million tokens have now entered circulation. The cryptocurrency’s supply grows whenever miners add a new block to the chain and receive the corresponding block reward. This inflation of the asset isn’t fixed, decreasing with time as events known as Halvings take place. Initially, Bitcoin started out with a block subsidy of 50 BTC, but four Halving events have occurred since then, bringing the metric down to just 3.125 BTC.

Halvings occur about every four years, with the next such event being estimated to occur sometime in 2028. Thus, as time passes, the block reward will only shrink further, reducing the growth rate of the asset’s supply. There is a limit to how small the block reward will become, however, as the cryptocurrency’s supply itself has a hard cap: 21 million tokens. After this figure is reached, no more block subsidy will be handed out, so no more Halving events will occur, either.

With the Bitcoin supply now hitting the 20 million mark, more than 95% of all BTC that will ever be has hit circulation. This milestone was cleared on Monday as block 940,000 was mined. It took the network 6,267 days or roughly 17 years to reach this point. Glassnode has shared a chart that compares the supply record against some of the other 20 million milestones achieved by Bitcoin in its history.

Bitcoin Records

The supply milestone is the latest in a large list of records | Source: Glassnode on X

Now, the question is: when will BTC hit the final 21 million supply milestone? Since the growth rate of BTC is only trending down as Halvings occur, the remaining 1 million will take more time than any of the previous 1 million batches. In fact, the remaining stack of tokens will take many more times to mine than all coins in existence today: about 114 years. That puts a possible timeline for the record at the year 2140.

A consequence of the Bitcoin supply being capped is that miners will eventually stop receiving a part of their income. These chain validators make revenue via two streams: the block subsidy and transaction fees. As Halvings occur, the former is going down over time, but it remains the primary source of income for the miners today.

Once all of the Bitcoin supply is depleted, miners will need to rely on the transaction fees alone to make ends meet. For now, the fees aren’t big enough to sustain this group, but it’s anyone’s imagination how the picture will look in 2140.

BTC Price

At the time of writing, Bitcoin is trading around $70,800, up more than 5% over the past week.
